### Hi. I’m David Cohen.

My first love was mathematics and I began tutoring others in math when I was a student in high school and I continued tutoring when I attended Brooklyn College and Columbia University graduate school. After that, for 23 years as a high school math teacher, I taught every course from 9^{th}-grade algebra through geometry, trigonometry, pre-calc and AP Calculus. At the same time, I was professionally trained and I trained others in a variety of approaches to self-development that improved my skills at connecting with students, understanding different ways of thinking, and providing students with means of overcoming psychological obstacles to learning. When my son was a toddler, I began teaching him math by playing card games with him that required him to develop math skills in order to beat Daddy. He now has a Ph.D. in neuroscience and is working on the cutting edge of people analytics.

In tutoring students in math, I aim for understanding, while dealing with the pragmatic issue that most of what students are tested on in school is problem-solving. It’s cookbook math; there is a recipe (procedure) for every problem. If you practice the procedures that I teach, you’ll be able to solve any problem that these procedures are designed to solve. If you understand *why* these procedures work, then even without knowing a procedure, you’ll be able to think your way to a solution of any problem.

I have a Park Slope location. You can contact me through this website or phone me at 917-679-5193.
